Shaping the body
I'm partial to low, simple, sculpted shapes. Envision how you'd like to place your hands and sketch a rough shape on the blank.
Shape it with saw, rasps, files, etc. There are no rules about body shape, but you'll probabaly find that you gravitate towards a particular style after making a couple of planes.
One of these days, I'm going to make a plane that looks like an Indy car...
