Influences
Like most builders, I have played guitar and done woodworking most of my life. The craft of guitarbuilding is filled with endless challenges and combines many interests I have had since childhood: music, wood, models, engineering, research, art, science, etc.
As an adult, I have been greatly influenced by the work of James Krenov, George Nakashima, David Pye and other thoughtful craftspeople. I have been fortunate to have several great role models throughout my various careers over the years, and I am lucky to have a wife who is a talented artist and sculptor. I have been inspired by many great guitar builders, and have been fortunate to become friends with many of them - remarkable people, generous with their talents and advice.
Training
I built my first guitar 17 years ago, and it really sparked something. Ten years ago I was ready for a career change and moved towards full-time woodworking. I was fortunate to first study and work with an amazing craftsman, and good friend - John Reed Fox. For nearly three years I then worked side by side with Julius Borges, learning every step of his building process - working my way from "elf" to "shop foreman". I recently completed a week-long, intensive archtop class with Tom Ribbecke, a great experience that exposed me to many new ideas and really got me thinking.
In all seriousness, there is no substitute for the kind of training you receive working alongside masters like these. Every day is like being at school, and the insight and discipline you gain from the hard work is invaluable. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude and they have truly inspired and shaped my approach.
Contributions
This fertile environment also exposed me to many great old instruments, great players and wonderful builders. It inspired me to co-found the New England Luthiers group, a great source of information, expertise, and many close friendships - definitely one of the most rewarding endeavors I have been involved with.
I would encourage guitar enthusiasts to get involved with ASIA and the GAL, and to look into local groups as well. If there isn't one in your area - start one.
